Why Acupuncture?

Our Naturopathic Doctors and Registered Acupuncturist provide comfortable and personalized acupuncture treatments for a variety of concerns ranging from stress, anxiety and mental health to facial rejuvenation and skin concerns.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in eastern medicine traditions. Recently, this treatment method has seen more widespread popularity and The World Health Organization (WHO) and others have recognized acupuncture for its ability to enhance wellness, improve performance, and help people achieve relief from chronic pain.

Acupuncture is applied through the use of needles that are strategically placed around the body. These needles stimulate the body’s nervous system according to its relationship with the many organs and functions of the body. This stimulation and regulation of the nervous system makes acupuncture a particularly helpful modality when addressing concerns like stress, pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Acupuncture treatments at Connected can leave patients feeling relaxed and with a greater sense of well-being.

Whether it’s for relaxation or rehabilitation, our experienced acupuncturists and Naturopathic Doctors will customize each treatment with your needs and goals in mind.

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help With?

  • Pain (both acute and chronic)
  • Stress and tension
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep disturbance and insomnia
  • Energy levels
  • Digestive concerns and bloating
  • Hormonal concerns like PMS and cramping

What Can I Expect At My First Acupuncture Appointment?

Your acupuncturist is going to ask you many questions about your health and lifestyle.  These questions can be about your diet, exercise, what type of actions are involved in your work, the qualities of your digestion and elimination, your mood and emotions, the locations and qualities of your bodily aches and pains, menstrual details, and about substance intake (caffeinated beverages, smoking, medications, sugar).  The acupuncturist will examine the topography, colours, and shape of your tongue, will examine your complexion, eyes, fingernails, check your radial pulse (located on the inner wrists), and might palpate areas of the body.  The inspection of the tongue, body, pulse, and the details gathered from questioning will help your practitioner to group these details/symptoms into patterns.  These patterns will then be used to determine the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) diagnosis which will then let your practitioner know how to treat and advise you.

Your treatment is a collaborative effort between you and your acupuncturist.  You have the ability and the right to consent to any and all aspects of the intake and treatment process.  This includes the right to refuse consent to any modality, to not be touched or treated in certain areas.  Your acupuncturist will check in with you throughout the treatment to make sure you are comfortable, feel safe, and heard, as well as, determine if a point is bothering you.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

This is the most common question asked about Chinese acupuncture, since many people associate needles with pain. Acupuncture needles are a similar thickness to a dog’s whisker, and are virtually painless when inserted.

The practitioner will insert the needle to the appropriate depth. You will then usually feel a very unique sensation that can vary from tingling, to heaviness, to warmth, or even nothing at all. Each person’s experience is different. Should you experience any discomfort, inform your practitioner, and they will adjust the needles accordingly.
