We were curious to catch up with Murray and chat about what it's like to sustain a thriving acting career, beauty expectations in the industry and the power of growth that comes with age. This inspirational interview is a must read for anyone who is passionate about their dreams and bold enough to chase them.
WHAT IS THE MISSION OR PURPOSE OF WHAT YOU DO?
I’ve always wanted to move an audience the way I was moved growing up watching movies like The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter (two of my favs). As storytellers we can help heal, inspire, provoke or simple entertain people around the globe. It’s a superpower when you really think about it.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENTER THIS FIELD?
Why would I chose to do ONE thing for the rest of my life when I can be an actor and be ANYTHING and EVERYTHING at ANYTIME ANYWHERE in the world, or the universe for that matter. Make pretend has no limits and that’s what’s appealing to me.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF BEAUTY?
Beauty is from the inside out. Someone who is happy and confident is beautiful. Beauty is also self-acceptance. Somebody who experiences life fully and with their whole body is beautiful.
WHEN DO YOU FEEL YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL, RADIANT AND CONFIDENT?
I feel the most beautiful when I’m naked. When I wake up next to my fiancé in the morning, bare-faced, and there’s nowhere to hide. When I can face him with all my imperfections and not want to turn away. It’s no longer about me anymore, it’s about us.
WHAT DOES CONNECTION MEAN TO YOU?
Connection is everything to me. My friends, my family, my partner, my community, my job etc. Humans are social creatures, we thrive on connection. When I get in my head on set, all I need to do to ground myself is make eye contact, or hold my scene partner‘s hand. We are not alone.
WHEN IT COMES TO FEELING BEAUTIFUL AND CONFIDENT, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD SHARE WITH YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
The answer is not outside of yourself, but within. Sit still with yourself and dig deep. What’s actually going on? Name it. Own it. Talk about it. Ask for help. Take it’s power away. I spent my 20s anxious and depressed because I was chasing the impossible. When I turned 30, I let it all go. Now I’m finally growing into myself.
WHAT ARE THREE MUST-HAVE THINGS IN YOUR PURSE AT ALL TIMES?
Burt’s Bee Tinted Lip Balm (Zinnia), LUMION Oxygen Mist (thanks to CONNECTED!) and a reusable bag.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A CAREER MOMENT THAT YOU'RE MOST PROUD OF?
I won the Brian Linehan Actors Awards for my work in a short film that I co-wrote, produced and starred in called She Came Knocking. It’s so lovely to be recognized for your work.
