9 Fun And Weird Facts About Skin
That You Never Knew

When it comes to skin, you might think you’ve heard it all before. After all mainstream reminders like ‘drink more water’ and ‘wear sunscreen’ are all over Pinterest and social media these days. Well as you may know here at CONNECTED, we are skin strategists who are completely in love and obsessed with skin health, so today for fun we’d like to dazzle you with some fun skin facts that will rock your next trivia night.
9 FUN FACTS ABOUT SKIN THAT YOU NEVER KNEW
SKIN HEALTH FACT #1: WE HAVE A LOT OF SKIN CELLS
Did you know that the average human being has roughly about 300 million skin cells? That means that a single square inch of skin has about 19 million skin cells and up to 300 sweat glands! So when we say it’s important to take care of your skin, it’s because it physically makes up a lot of our physical body.
SKIN HEALTH FACT #2: WE SHED
Our bodies shed — and not just the hair that we inevitably find in the shower drain. Our skin is constantly shedding dead cells. How much do we shed? We’re glad you asked! About 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells are shed every single minute, which adds up to about 9 lbs per year! How cool is that?
SKIN HEALTH FACT #3: BUGS ARE A THING
We don’t mean insects, but our skin is home to more than — (wait for it ) — 1000 species of bacteria. Just take a moment and wrap your head around that.
SKIN HEALTH FACT #4: LEGS GET DRY
The skin on our lower legs tends to be dryer because we have fewer oil glands in that area compared to other parts of the body. So don’t forget to moisturize and show your calves some love!
SKIN HEALTH FACT #5: SWEAT MATTERS
The skin can release up to 3 gallons of sweat a day in hot weather! It’s been a hot summer here in Toronto, so make sure you keep hydrated!
SKIN HEALTH FACT #6: OUR FACES SHRINK
As we age, we lose bone mass overall, including the bones in our face. That’s right, medical studies show that the face really does shrink as we age. (Fun fact or freaky?)
SKIN HEALTH FACT #7: LIPS ARE DIFFERENT
The skin on our lips is different from the rest of our body, because it’s thinner and far more delicate. To help you visualize, consider this: the skin on our face can be up to 16 cell layers think. Meanwhile the skin on our lips is only about 3 to 5 layers thick. Quite a difference, right?
SKIN HEALTH FACT #8: COLLAGEN EQUALS PLUMPNESS
Lip plumpness is due to collagen. As we age, our body produces less of this protein and our lips slowly decrease in volume. UV rays contribute largely to the degradation of collagen in the skin, so it’s just as important to protect your lips as it is the rest of your face. (We love this SPF Lip Balm for this very reason.)
SKIN HEALTH FACT #9: LIPS CHAP BECAUSE…
Our lips are susceptible to chapping because they don’t contain any sweat or sebaceous glands, which are responsible for producing hydrophilic film, which protects the skin and keeps it hydrated. Who knew?
SKIN IS A COMPLEX, SOPHISTICATED ORGAN
There is so much that isn’t commonly known about our body’s largest organ, the skin, which is why we love to talk about it. We like to say that we know skin inside and out again. We dig into all the science about how it grows, ages and reacts and deliver long-term holistic treatment plans to nurture healthy skin and combat skin issues.
